What is International Family Mediation?

Nowadays, people travel, work, and build relationships across borders. In a sense, we are citizens of the world. From these life journeys, multi-cultural families are often born: couples of different nationalities, people who met and married in a foreign country, or families living and raising their children far from their place of origin.

However, when conflict or separation arises, reality becomes more complex. The defining characteristic of these disputes is the element of multiculturalism; different legal systems, languages, cultures, and perceptions of "family" meet and, many times, collide.

Into this unique and sensitive environment steps International Family Mediation. This is a specialized process that allows parties to discuss matters safely, understand one another’s perspectives, and seek solutions that respect the family and, above all, the best interests of the child.

When can International Family Mediation help?

International family mediation can be an effective dispute resolution tool in cases such as:

• When parents have different nationalities or live in different countries.
• When a dispute arises regarding the child's place of residence or their relocation to another country.
• When a parent removes or retains a child in another country without the other parent's consent.
• When there is a need to arrange contact and communication between the child and the parent living in a different state.
• When parents wish to avoid a lengthy and adversarial court process in favor of a consensual solution.
• When a neutral and safe dialogue process is required to reach sustainable agreements centered on the best interests of the child.

The international family mediation process can take place even when the parents are in different countries, utilizing appropriate methods of communication and cooperation between the parties.

International Parental Child Abduction

One of the most sensitive and urgent issues in international family disputes is international parental child abduction.

This situation arises when a parent removes or retains a child in a country other than their habitual residence, without the consent of the other parent or in violation of custody rights. It also frequently occurs when a parent fails to return the child to their country of agreed residence following a temporary visit or holiday period.

These cases are typically addressed within the framework of the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction (Law 2102/1992) and International Regulation 2019/1111, through judicial proceedings aimed at the prompt return of the child to their country of habitual residence. However, legal confrontation often intensifies the already strained relations between parents and hinders their communication; frequently, the child becomes alienated from one parent, without having chosen to be.

How does International Family Mediation help?

In these highly emotionally charged cases, international family mediation acts as an effective and humane bridge for resolving the dispute. With the assistance of a specialized mediator and the contribution of their lawyers, parents have the opportunity to discuss and negotiate the family’s new reality. They can reach immediate, practical, and sustainable solutions by focusing on the best interests of the child—whereas in any other case, the process would take years with an uncertain outcome.

What practical issues can be resolved through International Family Mediation?

The process helps the parties to draft agreements that regulate:

• The safe and organized return of the child.
• The child’s permanent place of residence.
• Custody and the exercise of parental responsibility.
• Contact and visitation (including travel) with the parent living in the other country.
• Child support and financial contribution arrangements.

In this way, the child's return or relocation is not experienced as a violent severance, but as an organized and consensual transition that preserves family relationships and, above all, the child’s emotional balance.

Proactive Mediation

International family mediation can also function preemptively when, following a separation, one parent wishes to relocate to another country. Through structured dialogue, parents can agree in advance on issues such as the child's residence, contact with the parent living abroad, and travel arrangements, ensuring stability and security for the child.

Our Contribution

As a family law attorney and accredited mediator specializing in international family disputes, I support families navigating complex cross-border conflicts, particularly in cases of international parental child abduction.

I have attended and obtained a certification after a specialized training in international family mediation from MiKK (International Mediation Centre for Family Conflict and Child Abduction) in Berlin—one of the world’s leading organizations in this field—and I serve as the MiKK Ambassador for Greece. The MiKK model is internationally recognized and has proven its effectiveness in cross-border family mediation cases.

Furthermore, I have been trained abroad in the "Voice of the Child" process, a specialized method which allows for the discreet and safe integration of the child’s perspective and needs into the mediation process.

With extensive experience in cross-border family disputes and cases of high cultural and legal complexity, I aim to create a safe space for dialogue where parents can seek functional and sustainable solutions.

Our Goal

We aim to achieve agreements that:

• Protect the best interests of the child.
• Reduce conflict between parents.
• Ensure the continuity of the child's relationship with both parents.
• Create stable foundations for communication, even when parents live in different countries.

International family mediation can serve as a vital bridge of communication during moments of high intensity, helping families find solutions with respect, sensitivity, and a vision for the future.

A Humane and Effective Approach to International Family Disputes

International family conflicts are not merely legal cases; they are stories of people, parents, and children caught between two countries, two realities, and often, intense emotions.

International family mediation offers the possibility of seeking solutions with composure, respect, and a vision for the future. It helps parents redefine their roles, prevents the alienation of the parent living in another country, and ultimately allows them to shape solutions that truly protect the best interests of the child.

Seeking a mutually acceptable solution is not a sign of weakness. It is often the most mature and effective choice for a family's future.
